Pre-Holi Care for Your Skin A Dermatologist’s Guide

Holi, the festival of colors, is a joyous occasion celebrated with vibrant hues, music, and festivities. However, while playing with colors is fun, it can take a toll on your skin. The synthetic chemicals in colors, prolonged sun exposure, and harsh scrubbing can lead to skin irritation, allergies, and dehydration. As dermatologists emphasize, proper pre-Holi skincare can help protect your skin and ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.

In this guide, Skin Town Clinic shares dermatologist-approved tips to prepare your skin before Holi so that you can celebrate worry-free.

 Pre Holi skincare

1. Moisturize your skin

Moisturize your skin

Apply a Moisturizer or oil to your exposed and non exposed body parts. This will create a barrier between your skin and color and help in washing off the color quickly

2. Oil your hair

Oil your hair..

It is always better to wash your hair a day before Holi. Later, apply a layer of coconut oil on your hair from root to end as it will prevent it from getting dry and frizzy.

Rather than keeping it open, its better to tie your hair into a bun to ensure that there’s a minimum contact with color

3. Waterproof sunscreen

To avoid tanning, apply waterproof sunscreen of spf of at least 30 on exposed body parts like face, neck, hands. As any waterproof sunscreen is generally effective for an hr only make sure you reapply it every hour.

4. Keep Your Hair Covered

Your hair is just as prone to damage as your skin. Apply coconut oil or a leave-in conditioner to prevent colors from drying out your hair. If possible, wear a cap or scarf to provide additional protection.

5. Paint your nails

Paint your nails

In addition to your skin, it is also very important to protect your nails from getting damaged during Holi. Applying a thick coat of nail paint will keep the colors from harming your cuticles.

6. Protect your lips

Protect your lips

To protect your lips from the harmful chemicals and colors, apply petroleum jelly or lip balm with spf instead of a lipstick.

 While playing Holi

Choose Organic or Herbal Colors

Chemical-laden colors can cause skin rashes, dryness, and allergies. Opt for organic, herbal, or homemade colors made from natural ingredients like turmeric, henna, beetroot, and flower petals. These are skin-friendly and easy to wash off.

Post-Holi Skin Care Tips

1. Never rub your face or your body forcibly to remove colors

Use a gentle facewash and body wash all over and gently scrub skin with a loofah to get rid of the color.   After your shower, don’t forget to apply a nourishing body lotion and face moisturizer as the skin tends to become dry.

2. Use a softer, preferably a medicated shampoo to rinse color from hair

After the shampoo, apply conditioner on the lengths of hair. Leave on for a couple of minutes and rinse with cold water. Use color protect conditioner for color treated hair.

3. Go for natural face masks

Natural face masks and packs are the best! They not only sooth your skin but also help1 restore the natural balance of it. Try using uptans made of curd and besan (gram flour) or rose water, turmeric and sandalwood.

4. Use oil to remove colors

Olive  or coconut oil is a very mild oil which is great for your skin. User a cotton ball to gently wipe off the color on your skin after Holi.

5. Drink ample amount of water

Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water to keep you hydrated and your skin acne free.

6. Avoid salon treatments

If you plan to go for salon treatments like threading, waxing, shaving, etc. it is best to put them on hold for four to five days post Holi. This is because your skin is already damaged by colours and sun exposure and you do not want to irritate it further with these painful treatments. Let it heal before you do any of these.

7. Get rid of red and irritated skin

The redness is caused by an allergic reaction to the Holi colors that are often adulterated with heavy metals and oils. Always use a good moisturizer to soothe skin afterwards and you may use a mild steroid and antibiotic based cream  to take care of the allergy. For itching you can take antihistaminics like levocetrizine 5mg unless contraindicated. But safest is to consult a qualified dermatologist.

These simple yet effective skin care routines, if followed properly can keep your skin problem free even after Holi. Don’t let the fear of skin troubles bother you any longer!
